The Family Practice Residency Program was the first such program at TTUHSC, beginning in 1973. Interns spend three months on the Family Practice Service. The remainder of the year includes rotations in Obstetrics, Gynecology, Pediatric Ward, Pediatric ER, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, and Surgery Sub-Specialty. They also spend one month on the Family Practice Office rotation and a half day each week in the Family Practice Center ambulatory clinic, a new state of the art clinic which opened December 2007.
During the last two years of their residency, residents are required to spend three months on the Family Practice Service each year and one month on Family Practice Office each year. During their second year they are required to spend one month on rural medicine, one month on OB rotation and two months on Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. The remainder of years two and three may be filled with the following required electives: Cardiology, Community General Surgery, Dermatology, NICU / New Born Nursery, Community Medicine (two weeks), Pediatric Clinic, and Surgery Sub-Specialty / Radiology. There are a wide range of Open Electives from Anesthesia to Self-Designed Electives.
The Family Practice Center serves as home base for residents and the location for the majority of ambulatory care experience. It houses fully equipped exam and special procedure rooms, and a laboratory. Each exam room is equipped with its own computer for the electronic health record system.
