TCOM Residency & Fellowship Programs

The Dermatology Residency at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (North Texas/Fort Worth and South Texas/Houston) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association. The program provide trainees with the educational and practical experience that will enable them to deliver superior specialized care to patients with diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. The course of instruction will include the basic sciences, plus training in research and teaching.

The primary teaching strategy will employ problem-based learning. This type of learner-centered, case-based curriculum encourages critical thinking, problem solving, and self-direction. The acquisition of core competencies in osteopathic graduate medical education unique to dermatology will be required of all residents. Following a required Traditional Internship (PGY1), the three-year program will be varied, broad, progressive and systematic. The program will prepare residents to provide dermatologic care to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.

Based at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, the dermatology residency provides advanced educational and clinical facilities. Residents have full use of all library facilities including online access to the reserve collection of electronic journals. Access will also be available to residents while at community clinic sites. Clinical experiences obtained at both private community and academic health center facilities enable residents to treat a diverse population of patients. Residents have ready access to consultants from all clinical specialties where needed.

The Geriatrics-IM Fellowship at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine is a cooperative training project that partners academic, public and private health care systems. The goal of the program is to prepare trainees to assume roles as clinical practitioners, academic leaders and community advocates in the field of geriatric medicine. Research, teaching, and administrative components are based on a didactic curriculum and practicum supervised by an experienced team of faculty at the health science center and its affiliate institutions. Candidates for appointment to the program may select either of two tracks. The academic track will comprise two years of clinical education, research mentorship and administrative skills. The clinical track will comprise one year of intense clinical management with basic concepts of geriatric health care administration.

Clinical experiences include both inpatient and ambulatory care opportunities. Fellows are expected to participate in clinical services provided at senior living and long-term care facilities, community based services for elders, and home bound patients in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas. These clinical sites provide geriatric clinical experiences throughout the continuum of care and multidisciplinary integration.

The University of North Texas Health Science Center is a member of the Texas Consortium of Geriatric Education Centers. This organization provides program enrichment in education and administration and serves as an important resource for the Geriatric Fellowship.

The Residency Programs in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine / Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine - Our two-year program is for a D.O. who has completed a one-year rotating internship or its equivalent. This residency is particularly valuable if you want to specialize in neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine, increase your skills in manipulative medicine, plan to become a clinical researcher in the field or are planning an academic career at an osteopathic medical school.

The plus-one (one-year) option is designed for a D.O. who has completed a residency in another medical specialty and wants to strengthen and build on your osteopathic skills and practice for use in your particular field. Your primary training will take special consideration of your unique needs while performing your hospital rotations, emphasizing patients in your specialty and the role OMM may play in their care.

Upon successful completion of these residency programs residents will be eligible for board certification in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine by the American Osteopathic Association. Both programs conform to the requirements of the Committee on Postdoctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association and to the recommendations of the Educational Standards and Evaluation Committee of the AAO.

The Health Science Center’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) has one of the finest departments of osteopathic manipulative medicine in the nation. It boasts a large faculty of manipulative medicine specialists, including many board-certified faculty members and several pre-doctoral fellows.

The Palliative Medicine Fellowship at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association. The objective of the fellowship program is to provide the residency-trained physician with expert knowledge and progressive independence in the practice of hospice and palliative care. The fellow will be given the opportunity to put into practice osteopathic principles of health care. Upon completion of the program, the fellow will demonstrate useful interpersonal and collaboration skills, professionalism, and the clinical skills necessary to manage the majority of challenges encountered in a palliative setting. The graduate will also serve as an advocate for patients and families facing a life-limiting or life-threatening illness.

This foundation is a prerequisite to mastering palliative care skills at the sub-specialist level. Once the fellow successfully completes the program, the graduate will have the opportunity to pursue a Certificate of Added Qualification in Palliative Medicine from the American Osteopathic Association.
